Understanding FMCSA CSA BASIC Scores

The FMCSA's Compliance Safety Accountability (CSA) program uses a Safety Measurement System (SMS) to analyze data from roadside inspections, crash reports, and investigations to identify high-risk motor carriers. CSA organizes violations into seven Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs): Unsafe Driving, Hours of Service, Driver Fitness, Controlled Substances & Alcohol, Vehicle Maintenance, Hazardous Materials, and Crash Indicator.

Each BASIC has a specific alert threshold. When a carrier's score exceeds the threshold for their carrier category, they receive a BASIC Alert — which can trigger prioritized roadside inspections, warning letters, or formal investigations. Carrier scores are publicly visible at the FMCSA's Safety Measurement System website (ai.fmcsa.dot.gov), which means shippers, brokers, and insurance companies can see your safety record.

The most effective way to improve CSA scores is through consistent compliance practices over time. Violations remain in the SMS data window for 24 months before rolling off. The best carriers focus on driver training, systematic vehicle inspection programs, and proactive document management to prevent violations from appearing in the first place. BridgeWorks One™ provides automated alerts for upcoming expirations and compliance gaps — preventing violations before they happen.
